Practise having a Well Mind

When you’re on the road and regularly away from home there are small actions you can practise through the day to keep your mind focused, productive and well every day.

Why it matters

A well mind makes the difference between surviving and living an extraordinary life. The biggest benefits are:

  • Greater life satisfaction – being happier and satisfied with your life.
  • Enhanced performance – being more successful at what you do.
  • Increased resilience – being able to manage whatever challenges life brings.

What should I do?

  • REFRAME to keep your mind well.

  • Practise the 18 things that mentally strong people do.

How should I do it?

REFRAME to keep your mind well:

REFRAMING is when you take something that has happened and purposefully look at the situation differently to how you first saw it. Reframing changes the way your mind and body respond to a situation that is stressful. Reframing reduces how stressed you feel.

  • Ask yourself the “three whys” – “Why does it matter? Why does it matter? Why does it matter?” Each time you ask the question, go wider with your thinking, until you reach the ultimate why.
    • Example: Why does it matter that I get this load to the supermarket on time? Because I have perishable food in the back that has to be on the shelves. Why does it matter? Because customers are relying on it being there. Why does it matter? Because they are mothers and fathers who want to feed their children.
    • Now rather than feeling frustrated in traffic, you are a hero who is making a difference to the lives of countless people.
    • TIP: reframing works best when you think about how you are helping others.

L.I.V.E. more – Live with Love. Intent. Vision. Engagement.

  • Do something you Love. (Do something that brings joy or pleasure that is just for you.)
  • Do something with real Intent. (Do something with real focus and without distraction).
  • Develop a long-term Vision (a long-term goal). Write a goal that you would like to achieve in the next 12 months. Write down the steps you’ll need to take to achieve the goal. Make the steps as small as you can. Take the first step. (Make sure you TAKE ACTION)
  • Do something that makes you Engage with others. (Do something that connects you to others by doing something for others.) Humans are social and science shows we are often happiest when we do something for someone else.

Practise “18 things that mentally strong people do” –

  1. Practise GRATITUDE.
  2. Step up as the leader of your life.
  3. Accept problems and REFRAME them as challenges.
  4. Focus on things you can control. Don’t try to change things you can’t control.
  5. Set and keep healthy boundaries (boundaries are limits).
  6. Take calculated risks.
  7. Make peace with your past. This can mean you REFRAME the way you view your past. It can mean you forgive yourself and others for things that have happened in the past.
  8. Learn from your mistakes. Mistakes are good at teaching what not to do in the future.
  9. Create your own definition of success. Your long-term goals – your Vision – does not need to be the same as others’ goals.
  10. View failure as an opportunity for growth. Failure focuses your mind on new ways to grow that you haven’t yet tried.
  11. Set aside time to rest your mind.
  12. Accept full responsibility for your life.
  13. Practise patience and being calm.
  14. REFRAME unhealthy or negative thoughts.
  15. Spend your mental energy wisely. Thinking uses up mental energy. To be able to overcome challenges, you need to focus your mental energy on finding new ways to overcome your challenges.
  16. Practise being positive.
  17. Tolerate discomfort. Practice calmly facing truth, even when truth feels uncomfortable.
  18. Stay true to your values and PURPOSE.
