Hydrate Well

Hydrate Well

Whether you’re home on a day off or driving, there are small actions you can take to stay hydrated.

Why it matters

Water is essential for all aspects of your life as a truck driver.

  • About 60% of your body is made up of water.
  • Loosing just 2% of your body’s water through breathing, sweating and using the toilet reduces your physical and mental performance by up to 25%.
  • Every part of your body, including your joints, muscles, and brain relies on water to function normally.
  • Your body needs to maintain its water level to stay alert and well.

What should I do?

Sip water hourly – schedule it and set reminders on your phone.

  • Keep topped up with fresh water to maintain your physical and mental performance through the day.
    • Don’t replace your pure water needs with sugary drinks or artificially sweetened drinks like cordial, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit juice or drinks, vitamin-style waters, flavoured mineral water or soft drinks.
    • Sugar and artificially sweetened drinks make you thirsty sooner. Your body needs pure water to function at its best.
    • If you like sugary drinks, have one only as a treat earlier in your day.
